Writing

Writing has never stayed neatly inside one category.

Beyond journalism and books, I write essays, commentary, creative work, scripts, and whatever else seems like the right container for an idea. Some of it begins with an assignment. Some begins with a question. Some begins because something has annoyed me sufficiently that words are now inevitable.

The form changes. The instinct usually doesn’t: pay attention, find the thing underneath the obvious thing, and write toward it.

Highly Offensive Mom

Independent writing project

Highly Offensive Mom grew from the collision of parenting, military life, culture, and the kind of observations that generally become more interesting when nobody is trying very hard to make them respectable.

The project uses humor and commentary to write about family, identity, expectations, and the absurdities people tend to accept until someone says them out loud.

Broken Love Letters — Audio

Audio project · Currently paused

An audio adaptation of Broken Love Letters began as an experiment in what happens when writing created privately—and eventually published on the page—is returned to the human voice.

Recording is currently paused while I decide what form the project should ultimately take.

The work between the work

Not everything I write becomes a book, an article, or even something intended for publication. There are speeches, scripts, letters, essays, training materials, remarks, pitches, and pieces written because sometimes writing is simply the best way I know to figure out what I think.

That work matters to me, too.

The format has never been particularly important. The standard is: does it say what it needs to say, does it sound like a human being wrote it, and will anyone still care by the time they reach the end?
